What can I use to kill flies on my cattle?
It's getting to be that time of year again and flies seem worse this year than in years past. These flies can annoy cattle to the point of weight loss and give you lower than average weight gain on calves. Luckily there are several ways to treat flies on cattle.
Fly Tags= Probably the most effective way to treat flies for a long period of time. Most fly tags will give you around 5 months of control. Some can be stronger than others though. Look for the 30%-40% tags. They will be a little more expensive but they will do a better job.
Sprays= These can come in two forms, ready-to-use and concentrate. These can be poured on, sprayed or put in a rub. A rub is something that can be placed in the pasture allowing cows to go under it rubbing against it. This allows the liquid to get on them. It doesn't take long for cattle to know what this does and they will start using it frequently. Liquids are easy to use and don't require penning the cattle but need to be re-applied after rains or every few weeks
Dusts= There are many brands of dust you can use that will contain different types of ingredients. All serve the same purpose though. Dust can be applied to cattle with "dust bags". These are bags you can hang from trees or over feeders and when cattle bump into the bag, dust will fall out on them. This is another easy method of fly control but it also needs to be re-applied often.
These are the three most popular ways of controlling flies on cattle.
My quote of the week comes from Daneile Vare. It reads "Diplomacy is the art of letting someone have your way."
