Do I need to be feeding the deer this time of year?
July and August can be a tough time for deer in our area. With conditions being very dry, there just isn't a lot out there for them to eat. Deer are feeding on yaupon leaves now on that is a seventh or eighth choice plant. This means deer will not usually feed on this unless the other plants they prefer are no longer there or are to tough to eat.
Supplementing protein right now would be a good idea. Feeding a 20% protein deer chow that can be mixed with corn can bring deer in and give them a little extra boost to get them through the summer. A rate of up to 50/50 corn and deer chow starting out will be fine. If the weather stays dry, increase the percentage of deer protein to 75/25.
Most bucks are still in velvet right now as antlers a continuing to grow. This being the case, it wouldn't hurt to keep a little mineral out for them. Deer will usually consume it better if it is spread on the ground.
Keep an eye on rainfall over the next few weeks and let this be your gauge as to how much protein to feed. More water will increase the amount of weeds and other types of food for deer. If it stays dry, supplemental protein should be increased. If it starts raining, more corn can be fed.
My quote of the week comes from William Arthur Ward. It reads, "It is wise to direct your anger towards problems--not people; to focus your energies on answers--not excuses.
