Do I still have time to fertilize my field and cut for hay?
July and August haven't been the best months to grow bermuda in the past but that doesn't mean this year will be the same. Bermuda will usually keep growing late into the Fall in our area. That could be October or November for us. As long as you get a little rain, grass will grow up until it goes dormant from cold weather and short days. This means you can still fertilize your bermuda and get at least one more cutting and possibly enough after that to cut again or graze. Since bermuda is not growing as fast this time of year, it is more likely you will get one more cutting and then you can turn the cows in on what's left. But as I said earlier, water is the key to making it all work. As it looks right now, we have a better than average chance for some rain over the next few weeks. So if you need a little more hay to carry you through the winter, keep a close eye on the forecast and when you think it will rain, go ahead and fertilize.
My quote of the week comes from Anon. It reads, "He who throws mud loses ground"
