Is now the time to treat my place for grass burs?
It's that time of year again when grass burs start re-emerging and infesting everything around. This happens twice a year, usually in March and September. To try and combat them, we need to be treating them in February and August.
A good granule to use is a product called Hi-Yield Crabgrass control. This is a pre-emerge that can be spread in the areas where the burs tend to come up. Another product that has had good results is Humic Acid. This is an organic fertilizer and works as a pre-emerge. Atrazine can be used as a pre or post-emerge spray but only in St. Augustine and Centipede grass, not bermuda unless it is dormant. For post-emerge control in bermuda, try spot spraying or using a wick applicator with Round-up or Finale. But be careful if you use it as a spray because it can kill bermuda this time of year. This is why a wick application would be best.
The small amounts of rain we have been receiving lately should be enough to kick off this crop of grass burs so be on the lookout.
My quote of the week comes from and unknown source. It reads, If you wish to be popular, ask a lot of people for advise. If you wish to be wise, ignore it."
