Can mistletoe be poisonous to my cattle?
Mistletoe is usually not a concern because it grows in the tops of trees and cattle can't reach them. But there are occasions when cattle can. Storms can bring trees down, or trees can be cut down making mistletoe accessible to animals. This plant is poisonous to animals.
The main toxin associated with this plant is phoratoxin, which is a lectin that inhibits cellular protein synthesis. Any part of the plant contains these toxins but the berries have the most.
There are things you can look for if you are concerned an animal has eaten mistletoe. Animals can be hypothermic (low body temperature), polyurice (excessive urination), bradycardic (slowing heart rate), mydriasis (prolonged dialation of the pupil). These can eventually lead to death if not treated properly.
My quote of the week comes from Frank Tyger. It reads, "Be a good listener. Your ears will never get you into trouble."
