What kind of feed would you recommend for my cattle? I can't feed them daily.
When cattle can't be check on or fed daily, I would consider a self-limiting feed that can be left out in the pasture with them. In this case, A liquid feed like Purina's Sup-R-Lix 2 or 2HL would be perfect. Cattle will consume what is needed of the feed, depending on the quality of hay or grass, to keep their bodies in a desirable condition. This feed comes in a 24% and a 32% protein and both have 5% fat. The limiter in these feeds is not determined by salt, acid, or taste but by the fat included in the feed.
By keeping a quality liquid feed out with your cattle, it gives you comfort knowing they have something to eat and they will not stand there and eat it all like they would cubes.
With a feed like this, cattle will come up to the feeder and eat several small meals daily. This will keep the microbes in their rumen active so the cattle can digest the feed better. With cubes, cattle eat one time a day or however often you feed them and they will eat all they can get their mouth on. This can raise the pH in the rumen and possibly kill some of the microbes that digest the feed.
The good thing about all of this is the price. Sup-R-Lix will be less expensive than most cubes and all of the quality cubes. If this sounds like what you are looking for, come by the store, give us a call, e-mail me at davisfeed@yahoo.com or check out our website at www.davisfeed.com
