Is it time to treat for Grass Burs?

In our area, pre-emergent for grassbur control should be done in February.  Since this is the last full week in January, you may want to start getting ready.  

For treating grass burs, use a granule called Hi-Yield Crabgrass Control.  This product, when applied following label directions, has given very good control of grass burs in the past.  But remember that these plants have two growing seasons so a second application should be done in August.

After application, fertilize the area very well with a fertilizer higher in phosphorous.  This will assist the grass in the area in thickening up and preventing more burs from sprouting in the future.
