How can I keep Armadillos from digging around my place?
Armadillos can do great damage to lawns, pastures and hay meadows by digging holes, some up to 10-15 foot deep. This can also cause a problem in sandy soils because of erosion.
Control can be a problem because there isn't a lot you can use to bait them with. Armadillos are usually after insects or worms when they dig all of those little holes in your yard.
One thing you may try is live traps. Bait the trap with earthworms, grubs or insects and place them in a nylon stocking from the back of the cage. The stocking will allow the smell to go through so the armadillo can find it.
Armadillos also have very sensitive noses so you may try spraying a castor oil base solution around the place or throw out some moth balls. Also try experimenting with some hot pepper around the places they dig.
If that doesn't work, you may try pulling an all-nighter and hunt them. They can come out at any time but usually from midnight through 4 a.m.
My quote of the week comes from Edward Phelps. It reads, "The man who makes no mistake does not usually make anything."
