What can I do about these army worms?

With the recent little "hit and miss" showers we've been getting, army worms will usually start showing up in haymeadows and pastures.  Usually, after a rain, grass will pop up and be tender and that's what the worms thrive on.  With it late in the hay growing season, many people have got enough hay but those that haven't or those that need to graze should be concerned.  Treatment can be much more effective while worms are young but remember that the economic threshold is 3 worms per square foot.
Treatment of the Fall army worm can easily be done with a carbaryl product like 80% sevin at 1-1.5 pounds/acre or Sevin XLR at 1 quart/acre.  Treatment around the yard can also be done with sevin or organic products like insecticidal soap.
Just remember to keep a close eye on your place.  These little pests can cover a lot of ground overnight.
My quote of the week comes from Mary Case.  It reads, "No pressure, no diamonds."
