Is there anything I can do to prepare for cold weather this Fall and Winter?
There are many things that need to be done before the first big frost. Begin with winterizing your house and barns. Wrap all uncovered or exposed water lines with insulation. Check the faucets around the house and cover them as well. Take a good look at water tanks and floats along with the lines running into them. Check your dog kennels and add a little warmth to them with hay or shavings. If you have a few old blankets, throw them in there. Hay will also work well in hog pens. Heat lamps can be added to chicken coops and other places where smaller animals stay.
Anti-freeze levels should be inspected on equipment like tractors and farm trucks. And equipment such as lawn mowers and trimmers should either have the gasoline tanks drained or have a fuel stabilizer added.
Last but not least, check your personal vehicles. Check the anti-freeze levels, check all the belts and hoses and check the battery. If you haven't got one already, put together an emergency kit with the following items:
flashlight, flares and a first-aid kit.
Jumper cables, extra belts and a tool kit.
A blanket, warm clothes and gloves.
Paper towels.
Extra washer fluid.
Extra food and water
My quote of the week comes from and Italian Proverb. It reads, "If you scatter thorns, don't go barefoot."
