What can planting Rye do for my Garden?
Planting rye (different from rye grass) in your garden this winter can do many things for you next spring. In our east Texas sandy soils root knot nematodes can be a real problem. Rye, with its many fibrous roots, will capture these nematodes and keep them from doing damage to your garden. Rye will also aid in loosening up your soil and adding organic matter back to your topsoil. This can be accomplished by mowing or shredding then tilling the rye back into the soil at least a month before planting your garden.
My quote of the week comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson. It reads, "Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect."
