Is now a good time to supplement protein for our deer?
Now is as good of a time as any. With the cold weather we have deer need more to eat and much of it just isn't there. This is also a tough time to plant anything and get it to grow. Nights are cold enough to kill tender grasses emerging from the soil. The best way to help them is with high protein feed like Purina's Hi-Protein Deer Chow.
In an average year, deer will consume about a pound per day of protein for every one hundred pounds of body weight. During the spring, the deer may not eat any, but in times like these, they can eat two or three pounds. If you it out there, the deer will benefit greatly.
Right now doe need the extra rations more than buck because most of them are pregnant and will have fawns in a few months. Whatever extra food they eat goes to the fetus. And this starts the ground work for a health fawn.
If you want to learn more about deer, plan on coming to our Deer Management Seminar, Friday, February 9th at the Centerville Community Center. We will start at 6:30 that evening. Please RSVP by calling one of our two stores.
My quote of the week comes from R.E. Shay. “It reads, Depend on the rabbits foot if you will, but remember it didn't work for the rabbit.”
