Is there anything I can plant now to help with my hay shortage?
Over the next few weeks, our temperatures usually average close to the same as this fall when we planted our winter pastures. This will allow us to get by with planting a few winter crops now and give them a chance to grow. Crops that fit this window well include oats and rye grass. We usually won't have a die-off of either until May so that gives you 2-3 months to grow, graze and cushion yourself in case you run out of hay. If you see that you will be running short of hay before we can graze bermuda, then think about planting soon.
My quote of the week comes from Anon. It reads, "A closed mouth gathers no foot."
