What's the big improvement in Omolene that people are talking about?

Talking to horse people around the country, I have no doubt in my mind that Omolene is the best horse feed on the market, but it did have a drawback.  Some people said the feed made there horse hyper or jittery.  This could be compared to a "sugar high" in some people.  Purina has now come out with a new, improved Omolene that has a controlled energy formula.  This controlled release system is already included in Strategy so anybody feeding that product knows how good it works.  The new product had less sugar and molasses.  The new Omolene has more energy provided through vegetable oil.  The bag now tags at 6% fat.  When horses are fed a higher fat diet, the rise in blood glucose following the meal is lower, giving the horse a calmer attitude. This also means he will receive more calories from fat and fewer from starch.  This will give him a shiner coat and keep him in better condition.
There are basically two types of horses, aerobic and anaerobic.  Aerobic horses are the performance types.  Long duration, sub-maximum effort. Endurance horses are a good example.   Anaerobic horses are your sprint type horses. Maximum effort, short duration.  Cutting horses, barrel racing and coming out of the roping chute are a few examples.  While most horses fit in these two groups, all horses will see a little of both.  Cutting horses are warmed up for a while (aerobic), then are put to work for a short period of time(anaerobic).   Roping horses are loosened up with trotting or light running(aerobic), then hit it hard going after a calf(anaerobic).
Horses have three places they draw energy from.  One of these places, protein found in the body, is not good for the horse.  The other two places will depend on the type of work your horse does.  Aerobic work will draw energy from fats that can be stored easliy while anaerobic work will draw more energy from carbohydrates, which have a limited ability to be stored.  Performance horses can effectively utilize both carbohydrates and fats.  When these sources are depleted, a horse will pull energy from body proteins found in muscles.  That can be very bad for muscle development and bad for the health of the horse.  Purina's new Omolene with higher fat will greatly improve energy amounts in both places, greatly decreasing the need to pull energy from body protein.
My quote of the week comes from Ben Franklin.  It reads, "The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness.  You have to catch it yourself."
