What options do I have for seeding my pasture this Spring?
There are type main varieties of grass that are seeded in pastures in our area. Bermuda grass and Bahia grass.
Both can be planted now and up until the moisture runs out. Here is a little information on both types:
Bermuda grass
Common: Can be planted in a wide range of soils from sand to clay, easy to establish, covers well, good for grazing or cutting hay, planting rate 5-10 pounds /acre
Giant: Resembles Coastal bermuda, grows tall, can be planted in a wide range of soils, excellent for grazing or hay, planting rate 5-10 pounds/acre
Texas Tough Bermuda: A mixture of Giant, Common, and Common unhulled. Have shown to do well in grass studies at Texas A&M. Has the same features as the other two.
Bahia Grass
Pensacola Bahia: This is also known as common Bahia, this is an excellent grazing grass but doesn't do as well for hay. It has a very hard seed coat, you usually see about half of the grass come up this year and half the second year. Once established it is very aggressive and will overtake some types of bermuda. Plant at 20-25 pounds/acre
Argentine Bahia: Best adapted to sandy soils, excellent for grazing, average hay, plant at 25-30 pounds /acre
Tifton 9 Bahia: An improve variety of Pensacola, has greater yields, higher protein and a longer growing season, seeding rates will be 20-30 pounds /acre.
