What could cause a fruit tree to have leaves but not set fruit?
There are many things that can cause a fruit tree to go without bearing fruit. See if yours can be one of these following reasons:
Tree is too young = Most trees can take three years to bear fruit
Fails to bloom = Without blooms, there will be no fruit.
Sick Tree = Usually caused from some type of stress which can include excessive watering, not enough watering, disease, insect damage, or little or excessive fertilization
Bloomed but no fruit = Check to see if we had any cold temperatures during the blooming period. If temperatures dropped down below 32 degrees it could have damaged your bud. You can usually tell by a slicing at the base of the flower.
Excessive leaf growth but no fruit = This is usually a sign of over fertilization. The nutrients the fertilizer provides go to the leaves, this causes young fruit to starve and fall off.
Mechanical Stress = Usually caused from a trimmer or lawn mower around the base or tree is partially ran over.
Pollination problems = pollination may not be complete, may need another variety to cross pollinate.
The reasons for trees not bearing fruit can usually be found in one of the above causes but I would also recommend a soil sample. A low soil pH can tie up many nutrients and make them unavailable to the plant causing no production.
My quote of the week comes from Carl Zwanzig. It reads, "Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side, and a dark side, and it holds the universe together."
